Long-awaited jailbreaking tool released

Greenpois0n, the jailbreaking tool whose release was eagerly awaited by the jaibreaking community, and the wait for which was even misused by malware peddlers, was finally released today.

According to the blog post by the Chronic Dev team, this release of the tool supports iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (4th and 3rd Generation) and the iPad but, so far, it is a Windows-only release.

“Thanks to geohot for the bootrom USB exploit. We have opted to use that instead of SHAtter for the sake of exploit preservation,” it says in the post, referring to the Sunday release of Limera1n – another iOS jailbreak tool that – according to the author – supports “iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, iOS 4.0-4.1 and beyond.”

The iPhone Dev Team also acknowledged that using the previously announced SHAtter exploit in the upcoming version of their PwnageTool jailbreaking tool would be pointless, since Apple would then be able to patch both holes instead of just one. So, they also decided to go with the exploit used in Limera1n.

In any case, we can be sure Apple has started working on the patch as soon as Limera1n was released. Jailbreaking one’s iDevice might not be illegal anymore, but that doesn’t mean that Apple supports the option – especially since it can pave the way for further attacks.
