What makes anyone think IP telephony is secure?

About a month ago, I was at dinner with several people who were clearly extremely knowledgeable about security. The conversation turned toward eBay's recent purchase of Skype, and some people at the table said that they already subscribed to Skype or Vonage, a Skype competitor. Everyone was talking about how great they were. I interrupted and asked them about the security concerns, especially given whom I was talking to, and it was just overlooked as the conversation kept talking about all the benefits.
