The Internet's new fear factor

In his 14 years as a virus hunter, Mikko Hypponen had seen a lot of ugly stuff on the Internet, but nothing quite like this. On Aug. 14, the chief research officer of Helsinki-based F-Secure Corp., was examining a new worm.

As he pulled apart the software code that brought the worm to life, he discovered a hidden message: "The first who detects this worm will be the first killed in the next 24 hours!"
