Exploring spyware and adware risk assessment

This paper posits a working definition of spyware and adware, and considers several ways in which this definition allows the impact from the introduction of these types of programs to be measured quantitatively. Using these new methods, a model for determining risk levels that is both programmatic and user-defined is proposed. Suggestions for evaluating tests of spyware and adware protection are outlined. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of various means by which the risks from spyware and adware can be mitigated are considered.
