Phishing is the attempt to trick Internet users into surrendering sensitive personal information by using legitimate-looking, but phony, e-mail and websites. Security analysts estimate that there have been 57 million phishing attempts in the past twelve months, and the rate of phishing attacks is growing rapidly. Phishers especially target banks and companies that do a large volume of business online. Phishing attacks erode consumer confidence in online security, and expose banks and other companies that do business online to financial losses and damage to their brands.
