Smartcards move a step closer

Retailers face a bill of up to $200 million to replace about 100,000 eftpos machines with smartcard-capable eftpos terminals by a bank-imposed deadline of January 1, 2008.

But the only bank which issues smartcards in New Zealand today is ANZ and with its competitors in no apparent hurry to follow suit, retailers have little to show so far for their investment.
