Web stats firm in flap over 'packet sniffing"

A leading internet statistics company says claims on its own website that it used potentially illegal packet-sniffing hardware to harvest information was a mistake.

Hitwise co-founder and director Adrian Giles said the website FAQ had been written by marketers who misunderstood the technology.
