Why you should take information security seriously

It seems strange then that when it comes to information in the workplace, we seem to place a far lower importance on ensuring the integrity and availability of the information on which we base our business decisions. This after all is what information security is all about. Why do we need to wait until a legal obligation is imposed upon us before we take information security seriously?
