A firewall is a common layer of defense across all your computing elements. It's a little like protecting your house. You probably lock all your doors when you leave for work, but what if you forget and leave one unlocked? If you have an alarm system, you probably worry less about checking each and every door and window each time you leave, because you know that the alarm system gives you common protection across all vulnerable doors and windows.
