Cybersecurity holes found in mock attacks

Fake cyberattackers and hackers largely foiled government and industry attempts to fight back quickly and effectively during a test of computer security systems, the government said Wednesday.

Yet the Homeland Security Department claimed victory in the four-day, $3 million war game in February. It was the government's biggest exercise in responding to mock Internet attacks.

Total cost of average data breach reaches $3.8 million

The average consolidated total cost of a data breach is $3.8 million, according to a Ponemon Institute study of 350 companies spanning 11 countries. The average cost incurred for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased from $145 to $154.
