FISMA could solve data security issues

It seems like every day there is news of a new consumer data breach, and the pace of such breaches is indeed increasing. In 2005, organizations reported 151 incidents affecting more than 57.7 million people, and half way through 2006 there has already been 93 incidents affecting more than 32.1 million individuals, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center.

Total cost of average data breach reaches $3.8 million

The average consolidated total cost of a data breach is $3.8 million, according to a Ponemon Institute study of 350 companies spanning 11 countries. The average cost incurred for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased from $145 to $154.
