Biometric ID cards scheduled for 2008

The UK’s first biometric identity cards will be issued in 2008, after the government’s victory in the House of Commons this week.

The initial plan was for the scheme to start in 2007, but the enabling legislation was delayed by last year’s General Election.

The average consolidated total cost of a data breach is $3.8 million, according to a Ponemon Institute study of 350 companies spanning 11 countries. The average cost incurred for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased from $145 to $154.
